Our students just returned from Atlanta, the cradle of the American Civil Rights Movement and this years' home to NAIS's 2016 Student Diversity Leadership Conference.
A whirlwind adventure, our students experieced many "firsts"; from boarding an airplane at Boston Logan International Airport, riding in the famous Atlanta streetcars, touring CNN Headquarters, sampling dozens of products at World of Coca-Cola, visiting the birth Home of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr, and exploring the marine wildlife at the Georgia Aquarium. Yet, our proudest "first" was taking part of the Student Diversity Leadership Conference.
At SDLC, our students were part of a national cohort of 1600 participaints from over 100 schools! As a multicultural and multiracial conference, SDLC set the stage for all participants to engage in meaningful conversations, form allies, and gain skills to continue to build stronger communities back home.
We are especially proud of our students: Kimberly, Sydney, Arthur, Nahseer, Christopher and Xavier for their willingness to be vulnerable and lean into discomfort. We commend them for stepping outside of our urban campus and taking a deep look into themselves.
Atlanta welcomed a humble group of students from Springfield Commonwealth Academy... and it empowered a group of new leaders ready to take on the challenge to be the best version of themselves.
