School profile

Springfield Commonwealth Academy (SCA) is a co-ed college preparatory school for grades 6 to 12 offering a strong academic curriculum and counseling resources to ensure students excel at learning and successfully transition into colleges and universities which match each student's unique needs.

Located in Springfield, the 3rd largest city in Massachusetts, SCA's campus first served as a boarding school for young women in 1890. Our campus covers an area of 19.7 acres which includes the main school building, indoor athletic center, dining hall, library, and separate dormitories for boys and girls. Our school sits on top of Ames Hill and is surrounded by historic mansions that are now home to both students and teachers.

We are accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and is SEVP-certified to accept international students.

Diversity is important at SCA. Our students not only come from the city of Springfield and other parts of Massachusetts; there are also students hailing from as far as France, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Senegal, the Dominican Republic and Mainland China.

We are also a member of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC), the National Honor Society (NHS) and the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). We offer a full range of clubs, sports and activities in addition to AP and Honors courses.

Did you know that we are also an official SAT test center designated by the College Board? Our students can take the SAT comfortably without ever leaving campus although we highly encourage visiting colleges of interest! Within a 100 mile radius of our school, there are over 100 colleges and universities such as Harvard, MIT, Yale and Williams College.

The Springfield Commonwealth Academy community is full of talented, intelligent and highly-driven individuals. We are continuously growing as more of the world's brightest students and teachers decide to become part of our school family. We hope you will be next to join us!

faculty information

Our Headmaster, Christopher J. Hopkins, a Massachusetts-native, holds a Master of Arts in English from Middlebury College. He has taught for more than 31 years and has served in five different schools including The Hill School, Canterbury School, and was most recently the headmaster at Maine Central Institute for 11 years. Mr. Hopkins has himself attended New England boarding schools and knows what students need to succeed.

A good school needs good teachers. Our faculty and staff are all highly educated, qualified and enthusiastic about teaching. The teachers at SCA are as diverse as our student body is and contribute tremendously to both school life and residential life here on campus.

With an average class size of 10 and a teacher to student ratio of 1:5, our school offers a very personal learning experience for each individual student. Teachers are not just teachers; they are friends and mentors. They also advise clubs, coach sports and some are even dorm parents looking after our boarding students at night and on the weekends.

SCA attaches great importance to the growth and development of teachers. They contribute so much and should be recognized.
